SCHOOL PROMOTION 2012.

We are enjoying our fourth disc golf season and have enjoyed hosting hundreds of students including schools from Foothills School Division, Calgary Catholic, Calgary Board of Education and private schools.  Disc golf is a great way to enhance your physical education or outdoor education program.

How much will it cost?

All students $6:  includes use of a mid range disc and course orientation which includes learning grips and throwing techniques and 18 holes of disc golf.  Fire pit usage is $2 per person.  There is not charge for parent volunteers and teachers.  Payment is by cheque payable to Tim or Heather Driedger or cash. Payment can be made that day or invoiced. (no GST)  One teacher per class is welcome to play a complimentary round of disc golf prior to their class date.

Open: May through Nov. for the summer season.  Snowshoe disc golf is available in the winter months.  Regular Hours: 10 am to 4 pm Tuesday to Friday, Saturday 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday Noon to 5 pm.  We will adjust hours to accommodate the school hours.

How much time should we plan for?

The orientation is about 15-30 minutes depending upon the group size.  Usually it takes about two hours to play the course, depending upon how the group chooses to play: singles, doubles or best disc.  Younger students may only wish to play 9 holes but the cost is the same.

How do you play the course?

Groups of 4 to 6 people can play for an individual score, or as doubles with a partner or as a team as best disc.  How the game is played depends upon skill and how much time is allotted for your day.  To play one throws a tee shot, then continues to make throws until you reach the target.  Count how many times you throw for the score for each hole.  Each hole is par 3, 4, or 5 with fairways for recreational approximately 200 to 400 feet.

What facilities are available?

We offer a portable toilet and hand washing station, picnic tables and fire pit.  We have the Bunkhouse for discs and beverages and snacks.  We offer a pitch and putt for the orientation.

Do we need volunteer parents and what would their responsibility be?

Yes, we ask a 1 to 5 ratio adult to student for elementary and junior high and a 1 to 10 ratio for high school.  Parents participate in the orientation and enjoy playing a round of disc golf with the students ensuring they follow the course rules and demonstrate good sportsmanship on the course.

How should we prepare before coming and what is the role of the teacher?

Have students wear long pants, runners, a light jacket, and bring a water bottle, sunscreen and a garbage free lunch if having a picnic.  It is often a good idea to send a note home ahead of time so students are prepared; we suggest having families visit our website so they have an idea what they will be experiencing prior to their arrival.  We ask the teacher have the parents and groups organized prior to arrival.  We suggest the teacher not be with a group but float among the groups to supervise on the course.

What about inclement weather?

WJ staff and the teacher will discuss the weather conditions and work to reschedule.

Is there a deposit required?

We do not require a deposit but we would appreciate advance notice if there is cancellation or a change of date.

Our mission:  To provide a unique family oriented disc golf experience embracing our heritage with an appreciation of nature.

“In our bones we need the natural curves of hills, the scent of chaparral, the whisper of pines, the possibility of wildness.  We require these patches of nature for our mental health and our spiritual resilience.  Future generations, regardless of whatever recreation or sport is in vogue, will need nature all the more.” Richard Louv, Last Child in the Woods – saving our child from nature-deficit disorder.
